I had been on hiatus for a year from public UFO research and writing. In April, I get a call from George Knapp with a request to be on Coast to Coast. He tells me he’s getting lots of calls that the UFO sightings are increasing substantially. After the phone call, I jumped on to NUFORC.ORG and took a peek at the first-quarter monthly numbers for the past ten years.
To my amazement, I noted that Jan-Feb-Mar monthly total was the best since 2014. It was clearly a seven-year high in UFO sighting reports. My first thought was a simple question: “Was the UFO sightings Report drought over?”
But the immediate question on people’s minds was whether or not the COVID-19 Lockdown was going to impact the volume of sighting reports. After all, since 2017 and the publishing of the UFO Sightings Desk Reference. We had told people that UFO Sightings Reports were driven by Population, Temperate Weather, Leisure, and Hours of Darkness. Lots of people concluded that with everybody locked down at home, theoretically, there should be a spike upward in UFO sighting reports.
First and foremost, January, February, March 2020, NUFORC monthly totals were the highest since 2014. I told George Knapp and fans that we would have to see where sighting reports were at the end of the 2nd Qtr. Essentially the first six months of the year. Because measuring statistics is most the time the measurement of what has been.
So, at the end of June, I pulled the NUFORC end of month numbers and I had mixed surprises.
April 2020 had a whopping 1050 reported sightings. With the COVID-19 Lockdown, I expected better numbers. What I didn’t expect was the second-highest reporting month in NUFORC history!
May 2020 was in the higher than usual range and similar to January and February. What I didn’t expect was a serious fall off, with a monthly number akin to bottoming out the year of 2018.
After consideration, I realized that the end of May was the start of the reopening phase in the nation. I suspected that people would be getting back to work. So, looking at June 2020 was a disappointing 52% of May’s number and only 27% of April.
But if I’ve learned anything doing statistics, I’ve learned don’t get disappointed with one month’s data point. The good news is that 2020 so far, is the best year for UFO sighting reports since 2014. The totals at the end of the 1st half of the year 2020 were 3896 sighting reports compared with 2014’s 1st half total of 3932, only a difference of 36 sightings. The chart below illustrates where 1st half yearly totals were for the past ten years.
I’m anxious to see how the July, August, and September numbers will shake out, Time Will Tell!
